Songwriting workshops and coaching

Songwriters will be learning the "Language of Song" at the Ninth Allowed Sound Songwriting Workshop, hosted by producer/ songwriter Ramesh Meyers:  “All the parts of a song- the lyrics, the melody, etc, live and breathe when they join together as a song.

Each song has it's  own particular thrust. It knows what it wants to say and how it wants to say it. The more you understand where a particular song lives, the easier it is to write it.
In the "Language of Song" workshop, we'll be working at ways to tighten up your craft so your writing is clear and has integrity. We'll also be playing with ways to loosen up your intuition/creativity, to make songwriting easier."

Meyers says the workshop is open to experienced writers and  those who have never written a song. ”The first half hour of each evening will be spent listening to songs by master songwriters of the last century, exploring how they approached various aspects of songwriting. Participants will write 3 new songs over the course of the workshop and  share them in a  supportive environment.  Discussion is lively and fun, and everyone gets involved.  We can also look at aspects of performance, if participants are so inclined.

The workshop begins the week of April 15, and proceeds bi-weekly for four sessions, one evening a week, 7-9:30, (which evening to be decided by participant's schedules). Cost is $110, $95 before April 10. Partial scholarships are available for "cash strapped artistes".

Meyers has been producing CDs at his Allowed Sound Studio since 1999, including "How Does it Feel to be Loved", which made a "Top 10 CDs of 2008" list in New York's Village Voice weekly.  His song "Do the Wait" was featured on the May 2010 cover CD of the British music magazine UNCUT.  Ramesh is currently composing and recording songs to accompany Brian Brett’s poems on a Canada Council funded CD as well as wrapping up a CD of original material by his Toronto band The Scenics. “New York had Talking Heads, but here was there equal in Toronto”  (Bob Mersereau, author of “The Top 100 Canadian Albums” writing about the Scenics’ album “Sunshine World”.)
